Diversity, Sustainability and Opportunity Summit

Little Rock - October 27-29, 2008

One of the greatest challenges facing our organization and our ability to connect across the community is our lack of diversity in terms of membership. If we are to become relevant to all of Arkansas we must connect with both inner city neighborhoods and rural communities; engage both economically advantaged and disadvantaged citizens; and engage all ethnic groups. This inclusion will educate all our community regarding the relevance of sustainability and the choices we make both daily and long term.

The concepts of sustainable development and community design help bridge the gap between economical, social and environmental justice. While not fully embraced by the populace as whole, adopting sustainability as a way of conducting business, developing our communities and preserving our unique and precious resources provides economic opportunity and security. Furthermore it insures the built environment in which we reside, work and are educated is healthy and promotes productivity and prosperity.

We have proven, through the recent completion of the US Green Building Council’s “LEED for Homesä” (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) project in the Argenta CDC in North Little Rock that housing can be healthy for its occupants, efficient to maintain and remain affordable for families across the economic spectrum.

With these ideas guiding us, the Arkansas Chapter of USGBC plans on developing a series of activities and opportunities for discussion between October 27-29. Mr. Jerome Ringo of the Appollo Alliance has agreed to assist us in our efforts to extend our message to a broader audience by having others hear the message of Mr. Ringo and learn more about the opportunities for all Arkansans regardless of age, economic status or residency; and discover how you might become involved in Arkansas’ most comprehensive organization addressing these important issues facing all of us today.

The proposed events will include time for Mr. Ringo to meet with the following:

Governmental Affairs

· Legislative members and targeting the African-American Caucus

· Hispanic Leadership

· Governors Office

· AR Economic Development

Fund Raising Dinner

· 10/28 at Clinton Library (evening)

Community Leaders

· The focus is on regional community and business leaders

General Public

· Tentatively set for 5-8 PM 10/27 at Central High School Auditorium

Future Leaders

· Meet with High School and Middle School Student Council and Officers from regional schools. This would be a sanctioned field trip and students would be brought to a central location (possibly Clinton Library) for presentation and Q&A

USGBC-AR Leadership

IMPORTANT - We need volunteers to serve on all committees. We also need chairs for a few of the listed events. This is a vitally important event for our chapter and our future growth and outreach to the communities in which we live and work. We will also be seeking sponsorships and supporters for the programs. If you are interested in participating in any way please contact the USGBC - Arkansas Chapter office at (501) 244-2332 or email at info@usgbcar.org.
